McDowell graduate James Conner got his college career off to a strong start tonight in the first half of Pitt’s opener against Florida State at Heinz Field.

Conner, a 6-foor 2-inch, 230 pound freshman entered the game in Pitt’s second offensive series and rushed for 9 yards on each of his first two carries. He finished the half with 28 yards on just five rushes.

Conner was one of two Pitt true freshmen who had a strong first half. Clairton grad Tyler Boyd, a wide receiver, had two rushes for 38 yards. He also returned a kickoff for 35 yards.

However, both Pitt freshmen were overshadowed by Florida State redshirt freshman quarterback Jameis Winston. He completed 17-of-18 for 240 yards and three touchdowns while helping the Seminoles to a 28-10 halftime lead. He also rushed for a touchdown.

Update: Conner finished the game with 34 yards on nine rushes after being stopped for a 2-yard loss on his final carry of the night.
